Following OpenAI’s GPT craze beginning nearly one year ago, several of the world’s largest tech firms were scrambling to piece together their own AI that can capture market share. One of these companies was Google, releasing its own chatbot dubbed Bard nearly five months after ChatGPT was released. Bard, similar to ChatGPT, was a chatbot that was leveraged alongside Google’s own ecosystem. On Thursday, Google announced its shift from Bard and rebranding to Gemini, derived from the name of AI models that developed the chatbot.
Along with Gemini’s release were a few new subscription options surrounding the platform. Previously during its earnings call, Google, and its CEO Sundar Pichai maintained its forward position on AI, claiming it to be at the forefront of several new technologies under Google’s blanket. One of these mentioned by Pichai was a new AI agent with the ability to assist users with Search. Regardless, Bard’s rebranding to Gemini also came with the rolling out of new subscription options for the AI service. Similar to GPT, Google is offering tiered subscription plans for different levels of Gemini, now releasing its highest tier dubbed Gemini Ultra 1.0. At a price of $19.99 a month, power users and business can access the new tier, even with mobile apps. The rebranding also came with the ability for users to access the chatbot directly on their mobile devices, with Android users having a dedicated Gemini app and IOS users having the ability to use Gemini through the Google app. Very soon, Google’s rebranding will bring a variety of productivity changing features, where “package AI agents” within Cloud and Workspace can increase the efficiency in any Google user’s workday.
