Youth Litigation for Climate Change

Currently, a generational shift is occurring as Gen Z is coming into the spotlight, bringing forth new beliefs. One of Gen Z’s biggest concerns is climate change, which is becoming increasingly worse as we speak, and a main reason as to why is because they will have to deal with the effects for the rest of their lives.

A significant portion of the Gen Z voting population made the choice to elect President Biden in the 2020 elections because of his promise to tackle climate change. He has made some progress on that front, passing legislation like the Inflation Reduction Act and the infrastructure bill, but some controversial decisions have been made too. For one, Biden allowed the Willow Project, an oil drilling project in Alaska that went viral on social media, to go through, along with approving new fossil fuel projects to the dismay of his young voters.

As a result, Gen Z is taking matters into their own hands, particularly through the usage of litigation. Recently, young activists filed a lawsuit against the state of Montana claiming that the state’s agencies were violating their constitutional right to a clean environment by approving fossil fuel projects without taking the climate effects into account. The case ended with a landmark decision as the judge sided with the climate activists, forcing the state of Montana to consider the environmental risks when approving projects. This is just one of many lawsuits across the country as Gen Z is looking for ways to make change, and they have been utilizing social media apps exceptionally to spread the message.

Gen Z activism is only growing, and it’s set to place more pressure on the fossil fuel industry moving forward. Record profits may be the theme in the present, but the youth is focused on changing that, whether it’s bringing them to zero or making them clean profits.
