World Themes This Week
Wakey wakey Invstrs, we’ve got a big week of trade wars, escalating Iranian tensions, Aussie elections and Bitcoin bull runs to contend with. Who’s ready for the week ahead?
On the trade front, remarks from President Trump about China’s economy never surpassing the US’ sparked fears of further volatility to come as the trade spat gets nastier. For now, all signs point towards a deepening conflict with both sides unwilling to back down in the near term. Brace for more uncertainty, people.
In the oil markets, the growing threat of conflict with Iran has forced the US to deploy more troops to the Middle-East and moved companies like Exxon to evacuate all foreign personnel from the area. Escalating conflict could place upward pressure on oil prices, supported by the OPEC+ decision to continue with supply curbing measures to support prices.
Down Under, the Aussie Dollar rallied 0.9% against its US counterpart after the conservative party pulled off a surprise victory. The majority of analysts had predicted a victory for the centre-left Labour Party, but Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s party managed to steal a win from the jaws of defeat.
In the crypto market we saw more frenzied buying as investors dived back into the virtual currency market on Sunday. Bitcoin rallied back above the $8,000 mark, before easing slightly below, indicating that last week’s surge was no random occurrence and that there may be more bullish activity to come.
It’s game on this week!
