WHO Did It?
The World Health Organisation (WHO) is attempting to send an envoy to Wuhan, China, to investigate the origins of coronavirus. This is the same World Health Organisation de-funded by President Trump for not containing the virus, the commander-in-chief of a military blamed by Chinese officials for planting the pathogen itself. Itโs a perfect circle!
Investors will be peacemakers. The world was shrinking before coronavirus with trade wars rife. It seemed world leaders would rather be poorer on an absolute basis if it meant being wealthier relative to others. The global economy didnโt respond well to that nonsense, and now things could get worse as we nosedive into the depths of a recession.
Beijing hasnโt signed off on an agreement for virologists to carry out new epidemiological detective work near a bio-research lab in Wuhan. It would help if it did. Thereโs pressure mounting from international peers and even some threat of sanctions. The markets swung heavily on the status of trade talks last year, mostly downward.
Shi Zhengli, deputy director of that lab, explored a cave over fifteen years ago and found a whole natural reservoir of coronaviruses from bats. She โswears on her lifeโ this pandemic has nothing to do with her, and American academics agree that any accidental spillage from the lab is โjust so implausible.โ
The best-case long-term scenario for the world economy is for China to open its doors and books. It needs to prove its innocence, and that shouldn’t be too hard, right? This would clear the air, and admitting a mistake is still better than being secretive and leaving the rest of the world to assume much worse. China’s move.
