Welcome To Court
Former President Donald Trump has been one of the most mentioned people in the media over the last 5 years, however, as of late, his name has dipped back into the shadows. Today, however, he is back in the limelight, and this time with a big legal case on his hands. So, what is this case all about? Well, Trump has filed a proposed class-action lawsuit targeting three high profile billionaires: Mark Zuckerberg (CEO of Facebook), Jack Dorsey (CEO of Twitter), YouTube, and its parent company’s CEO Sundar Pichai.
Many have viewed the move as a hail Mary response Trump has made in reaction to being banned from both platforms, shortly after the January 6th attack on the Capitol. Specifically, Twitter banned Trump altogether, Facebook suspended him for at least two years, and YouTube suspended him in January.
Trump’s argument comes from the constitution, in which Trump claims that the companies are violating his first amendment right to freedom of speech. However, because these are companies, they are legally allowed to run themselves as they see fit. In fact, according to CNN: such actions by the companies have previously been protected under Section 230 of the Communications Act of 1934, a federal law that provides legal immunity to websites that moderate user-generated content and has been used by tech platforms to deal with lawsuits. What do you think about the lawsuit? And do you think it will go anywhere?
