Thermal Rocket
In a groundbreaking development for space exploration, Lockheed Martin has been awarded a significant contract to develop a nuclear thermal rocket engine, a technology that has been highly sought after by both NASA and the Pentagon. This innovative engine has the potential to revolutionise space travel, dramatically reducing travel times to distant planets like Mars.
Kirk Shireman, Lockheed Martin’s vice president of lunar exploration campaigns, emphasised the importance of higher thrust propulsion and how it could revolutionise space exploration. The nuclear-powered rocket would require less propellant than chemical rockets, allowing for the inclusion of additional scientific equipment on missions. Not only does this technology hold promise for manned missions to Mars, but it also aligns with NASA’s plans to return astronauts to the moon and establish a permanent presence there. SpaceX and Blue Origin, tasked with developing lunar landers, aim to create spacecraft capable of refueling in space. However, nuclear propulsion could render frequent refueling less necessary, ensuring smoother cargo and supplies missions to the moon. The upcoming test engine will be launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard either SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket or the United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan Centaur rocket โ both chosen due to their national security launch contracts. Lockheed Martin has joined forces with BWX Technologies to develop the reactor and produce the fuel. This contract marks a pivotal moment in space exploration, paving the way for faster, safer, and more efficient missions to Mars and beyond. With nuclear thermal power on the horizon, the possibilities for human exploration of the cosmos have reached new heights. What do you think about the contract? And is this a major point of progress for the space industry?
