Equities In Focus: Worst & Best Performing U.S. Stocks in 2017

Under Armour Stock Suffered

Under Armour suffered

Investing.com compiled a short list of stocks that absolutely bombed last year – were you holding any of them?

Under Armour took first place, falling by a whopping 50% in value! Hopes had been high for the past few years that the sports retailer could challenge the market dominance of Nike and Adidas, but so far it looks like investors are not at all convinced. Last year’s Q1 and Q2 figures were bitterly disappointing – the firm lost $2 million and then $12 million! It seems Nike and Adidas will keep their places at the top of the pile for the time being, especially as Adidas has a ‘retro’ shoe aesthetic that greatly appealed to consumers in 2017.

Range Resources was second, a natural gas and oil company. Shares have plummeted over the last 5 years – check out this chart which shows the brutal drop!

Obviously General Electric couldn’t be forgotten either. There is new blood at the firm (CEO John Flannery) and its fortunes may be set to change after large scale alterations to the business (including thousands of job cuts), but looking at this year’s performance, it’s a sad picture. In Q3 last year the dividend for investors was cut by half after GE reported a bad earnings miss.

Here is a comparison of all 3 in chart form.

Other notable fallers outside of the referenced list include Foot Locker (-33.87%), Macy’s Inc (-29.66%), Mattel Inc (-44.17%) and Apache Corp (-33.48%).

Indeed, energy and natural gas exploration companies including Apache were hit particularly hard this year. 8 of the 28 worst performing equities on the S&P500 in 2017 were energy companies, reiterating the difficulties for the sector. By the summer of last year, the S&P500 energy index was underpeforming other sectors substantially, but throughout the second half of the year it saw a resurgence.

In contrast, Wynn Resorts, Boeing, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Micron Technology and NRG Energy were 5 of the best American performers in 2017. Congratulations to any investor who held them through the year!
