Population Problems
Do you want to have children? Elon Musk hopes you do. He said, “I can’t emphasize this enough, there are not enough people.” Low and declining fertility rates, according to Musk, are “one of the biggest risks to civilization.”
In today’s world, issues like climate change and inequality are causing people to forgo having children. Musk said that too many “good, smart people” believe the planet has too many people and that the population is out of control. Do you agree or do you believe the world has become overpopulated?
If you believe there are too many people, Musk advises you to look at the data. He said, “It’s completely the opposite. If people don’t have more children, civilization is going to crumble. Mark my words.”
In a letter to clients in July, Morgan Stanley analysts wrote that the “movement to not have children owing to fears over climate change is growing and impacting fertility rates quicker than any preceding trend in the field of fertility decline.” They used various data to back up their claim that climate change is speeding up the drop-in fertility rates, both directly and indirectly.
UCLA researchers found the number of births in the US fell in the nine months after an extreme heat event. And a study of 18,000 couples in China last year found that climate change was linked to a 20% greater risk of infertility.
If everybody stopped having kids because of issues like climate change, our species would eventually cease to exist. Musk wants to be sure this doesn’t happen, so he’s advising the world to have more kids.
