Poll: To Ban or Not to Ban? 📵

This week, we asked the Invstr Community a tough question regarding whether the United States government should ban TikTok. This is a highly debated topic at the moment, but the winner by the slimmest of margins was the 31 percent of Invstrs who don’t really care as they never use the app. TikTok has more than 1 billion active users on their platform, but it looks like many Invstrs simply don’t have the app. TikTok appeals primarily to the youth population, which is still a small section of the population, but it is extremely surprising that not many Invstrs have TikTok or even care about it, making this a very surprising first place vote.

Not too far behind are the 29 percent of Invstrs who believe that the government should ban TikTok because it is a surveillance tool for China. This is the main argument against TikTok as it is owned by Chinese company ByteDance, and China is known to have control over their businesses due to the nature of the country. As a social media app, TikTok has loads of data that China has access to, which has created privacy concerns from the US government. Considering how divided the issue is, this is a reasonable second place vote right behind the gold medalist.

Outside the podium, we have the 25 percent of Invstrs who believe the US government should stay out of the TikTok mess. Many are supportive of the government staying out of the way of businesses, but this sentiment is not being displayed in either political party as there has been a bipartisan push so far to take action on the app. Considering that this isn’t as popular of an opinion, it makes for an interesting finish to claim the bronze. Last, but not least, are the 15 percent of Invstrs who believe TikTok shouldn’t be banned. TikTok has been one of the fastest growing social media apps for a reason as the short video idea has aligned with the attention span of users, and the algorithm makes it so that you are essentially addicted to the app. Many members of the youth share this opinion, so it is surprising that this option did not get many votes.

Do you think the US government will ban TikTok? Have fun, and see you next time with more poll results!
