Musk’s Secret Mission
With all eyes on Twitter and his ongoing feud with Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk secretly launched a new project with an astronomical mission. After co-founding the ChatGPT creator OpenAI in 2015, it seems Musk still feels the artificial intelligence world has much more to offer. On Wednesday, Musk announced the debut of his new company xAI, with the profound yet ambiguous goal to unlock the “true nature of the universe”. On Friday, Musk will host a Twitter Spaces chat with other members of xAI, adding more background to the company’s goals and mission. Currently, the roster for xAI’s team includes several former engineers and data scientists from companies like OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Tesla, and more.
The move from Elon Musk comes several years after he disbanded from OpenAI in 2018 following a power struggle with current CEO Sam Altman. Since then, Musk has berated the entire artificial intelligence industry, but solely on the premise that it should be regulated before further innovation takes place. However, it now seems the Tesla Chief Executive has different plans, hoping to not miss out on AI before the industry catches more wind. For xAI’s advisory, he did appoint Dan Hendrycks, the current director of the Center for AI Safety. Despite fierce competition with Meta’s Twitter-copycat Threads, Musk has now embarked on a new competitive journey with Microsoft-backed OpenAI. Beginning in April, reports of this AI startup began stirring, with the company purchasing thousands of Nvidia GPU processors to potentially train generative tools on large amounts of data. Similar to his acquisition of Twitter, Elon Musk’s entrance into the AI space is centered around cultural safety, where he believes these tools for communication should remain uncensored and impartial.
