Monkey Business
Last week we discussed Monkeypox; there were few cases in North America, but many in Europe with dozens of cases reported. It was looking like Monkeypox was going to see its largest outbreak ever on the continent. Before its spread, the disease remained within Africa โ circulating at low levels for the past forty years. As of this week, there are 435 confirmed or suspected cases in 24 countries outside of Africa. There have not yet been any recorded fatalities from the current outbreak and the symptoms are different and milder than COVID. WHOโs the technical lead for Monkeypox, Rosamund Lewis has also stated that the chance of Monkeypox becoming a global pandemic is low even if possible.
Currently, there is no treatment approved for Monkeypox specifically, however, antivirals developed for use in patients with Smallpox may prove beneficial according to the CDC. Overall, it doesnโt seem like the virus will evolve into a COVID level scenario. Even so, because there are unknowns about the disease such as how it spreads may be speeding its transmission.
What do you think about the Monkeypox virus, and is it nothing to worry about?
