AI Takes on Cancer – Microsoft’s Newest Project
With a substantial portion of global bystanders in fear over the impact artificial intelligence can have on human life, there remain several major issues that could be solved by highly intelligent tech. Announced on Thursday, Microsoft and digital pathology provider Paige will begin development on artificial intelligence models to identify cancer. After investing over $10 billion into ChatGPT’s creator OpenAI, Microsoft has taken huge bets on the major upside AI could bring to human life. The new challenge they are faced with is the healthcare industry, which has both subjective and redundant aspects that could use a boost from AI technology. By partnering with Paige, Microsoft hopes to provide enough resources to improve doctor workflow with increases in accuracy and efficiency.
Paige, which was founded in 2017, works primarily on creating AI-powered solutions within the healthcare industry. By specializing in pathology, Paige has assisted doctors in making accurate diagnoses with large amounts of data. For their hopeful cancer-detection tech, Microsoft, and Paige plan to develop an AI model that will be trained on billions of images and scans that can effectively solve new cases for detecting cancer and tumors. Currently, a pathologist needs to diagnose someone for cancer treatment to begin, and in some cases, diagnoses could be inaccurate or delayed. Although Paige has had revolutionary accomplishments in the field, they turned to Microsoft for help to expand their operations with scale and complexity. As a supplement rather than a replacement, Paige hopes to create an easier environment for doctors around the world so patients can receive their care quicker and more accurately.
