Messi Marks Milestones – Apple TV’s Boom

Among some of the biggest sports news in the world is the life of Lionel Messi, who in July joined the American soccer league MLS under Inter Miami. The move came after several of Messi’s peers, among the greatest players in the world, signed exorbitant contracts with teams in Saudi Arabia’s league. Although American team Inter Miami couldn’t compete with the full-priced, liquid value of contracts from other Saudi teams, they were able to offer Messi a contract that several believe could bear more for the 36-year-old phenom. Alongside roughly $60 million a year, Messi was offered a portion of sales from Adidas MLS merchandise and even a portion of revenue from new subscribers from MLS streaming platform Apple TV. On Messi’s debut for the team, Apple released that new subscribers on July 21st reached over 110,000, up higher than 6,143 from the previous day.

Although the fine print in Messi’s contract hasn’t been released, there have been rumors that Apple TV subscriber numbers, which were around 1 million at Messi’s signing, have now doubled. At nearly $7 for base subscriptions and add-ons specific for MLS games, Apple’s streaming arm will certainly have a major uptick in their top-line figures directly attributable to Lionel Messi. Aside from the finances of the deal, Messi was able to take Inter Miami to win the League’s Cup, marking ten goals and three assists in just eight appearances. With Apple TV growing rapidly to compete with the likes of Netflix and Disney Plus, it is clear Messi’s signing for MLS has had a positive outcome for both Apple, the MLS, and his bank account.
