invstr U.S.A East Coast tour

by Jan 31, 2017

Throughout this week, invstr CEO and Founder Kerim Derhalli is visiting Universities and Colleges throughout the East Coast of the United States. He will meet with business students and faculty members to speak about finance, investing, his background in the industry and the changing technological landscape, in which invstr is playing a key role as a fintech business. Our message is truly global in it’s scope – we want to improve people’s access to financial education across the world. We already have players from over 160 countries with more than 500,000 games played in our app since August 2016.

Kerim will be speaking at the following colleges: –

  • Manhattan College
  • Fordham University (Fordham business students pictured with Kerim below)
  • Columbia University
  • New York University
  • Brandeis University
  • Harvard University
  • Boston University
  • John Hopkins University
  • George Washington University

A key audience for us at invstr is the millenial generation, particularly those with an interest in studying finance and business in higher education and those who wish to pursue a similar career path. These are the very people who will be entering the workforce at a time of digital disruption in the business. We frequently reach out to students across the world – and are encouraging them to take part in the Student Investing Championship which is open to every university.

Make no mistake, we are living in a time of great technological innovation. This is exciting but also represents difficult changes for the job market, which faces threats from the increasingly realistic prospect of automation replacing human workers across many sectors. The financial sector is also at risk for disruption. How? Kerim spoke about this at length in a recent interview with Efinancialcareers, where he discussed how aspects of the trade such as money transferring and mergers and acquisitions are being changed forever through new apps and services which cut out traditional banks all together.  You can read the full interview which asks whether banking jobs have a future, here.

These developments point to a revolution in personal finance, whereby access to financial services and information is opening up to the public in a way never seen before.

We can see this disruption through app based Mobile-banking apps like Monzo which was born out of a frustration with traditional banks and has ease of use as it’s top priority, responding to the need for banking to catch up with other sectors that have already taken advantage of great leaps forward in technological innovation. Other examples include Tide – a new mobile-first banking app from Passion Capital partner Eileen Burbidge which is specifically designed for small businesses. This again was designed to keep up to speed with the needs of small business owners who feel conventional banks are failing to meet their requirements due to slow sign-up processes, hidden charges and the like.

At invstr we are also contributing to this changing environment by offering people the chance to learn about the financial markets in a fun, social and inclusive way. Our app is a gaming platform and social network for finance built into one, which aims to educate those across a broad range of abilities on how investing and finance work. Too many people feel confused and overwhelmed when they think about finance, perceiving that it’s not accessible to regular people who aren’t involved in the industry. However it does not have to be this way and the closed-shop nature of the financial sector is rapidly changing – we want to take advantage of this and offer people a different experience of finance and associate it with enjoyment and empowerment.
