Instagram For Kids
Kids love social media. If you have children or little siblings, you’ve likely caught them using social media for hours on end. Interacting with friends, watching funny videos, and posting their favorite pictures is fun, albeit not always safe. Like Instagram, social media platforms have been publicly criticized for the abuse and bullying many teens face on the app.
Last week, Instagram published a blog post detailing its work to make its platform safe for its youngest users. Instagram is implementing strategies such as making it harder for adults to find and follow teenagers and prompting teenagers to be more careful about interactions in direct messages. However, the blog post didn’t mention anything about kids under the age of 13. It’s currently prohibited for kids under the age of 13 to use Instagram.
It’s easy for kids to use social media platforms in harmful ways, so companies are coming up with solutions to make their platforms safer. On Thursday, an internal Instagram post obtained by BuzzFeed News revealed Instagram is in the process of creating an app specifically for children under the age of 13. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, said that Instagram for kids was in early development and that the company doesn’t have a detailed plan yet.
More and more kids want to use apps like Instagram but can’t because they are too young. Instagram’s platform for kids could not only make their platform safer, but the product could also be a driver of growth for the company. It’ll be interesting to see how Instagram for kids develops into the future.
