ChatGPT’s Soon-To-Be Rival – Google Begins Testing AI Program “Bard”
Considering weakened earnings and guidance to start the new year, Google seems focused to alleviate another concern that has worried the search engine titan’s shareholders: ChatGPT. For those unaware, ChatGPT is an AI tool developed by Microsoft-backed company OpenAI, which specializes in automating virtually any text based on a user’s prompt. Although it is in its infancy stage, the new product shows promising signs of becoming a disruptive innovator in the web search industry, providing anything from better-curated answers to questions to even code debugging. Regardless, Google as an incumbent is forced to adapt, leaving the trillion-dollar company with no choice but to build their own text-writing software. “Bard” is the newest addition to Google’s line-up, hopefully becoming the next biggest rival to ChatGPT.
In a companywide memo released today, Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that Bard is now open for testing for all Google employees. After this preliminary testing round, Google hopes to take the software public in the coming weeks. Later this week, Search boss Prabhakar Raghavan will be sharing progress and updates of the program to worldwide listeners. Google also has also shared work into creating an API for their own specific chat software: which in layman terms means the underlying technology would be open for use by outsider developers and institutions. Google, however, isn’t the only one progressing the capabilities of this product, as Microsoft is planning to launch compatible ChatGPT features alongside their search engine Bing. In this new fight to dominate the entire online information space, it is still unknown whether ChatGPT will continue to have a leg up, or if Google can hold its crown tight for the next coming years.
