FACES OF FINANCE: BILL BLAIN

by | Jan 21, 2016

Welcome to Faces of Finance, where invstr introduces you to big names within the business world ranging from investors, market commentators and top level analysts, to entrepreneurs, authors, professors and more.

In this edition of Faces of Finance, we introduce you to Bill Blain, a lead strategist at Mint Partners and let him tell you about his work there: what it involves and why he likes it.

Bill Blain is a strategist at Mint Partners, the leading agency brokerage. He is a regular market commentator and has written for a wide variety of finance and business publications including City A.M. His words have also been featured on cutting edge online business websites like Zerohedge. He was born and raised in Edinburgh – but, based in London.

Bill has worked in fixed income markets since 1985. He started in the back office at Morgan Stanley, followed by spells at syndicate at Nippon Credit and LTCB before becoming a capital markets specialist and leading originator at Bear Stearns, rising to become head of FIG at HSBC before becoming trying to start a Hedge Fund in 2007 just as the global financial crisis struck. He then became a broker at KNG, head of fixed income at Matrix, before taking the team to Mint in 2012. Bill has pioneered new distribution systems and the “Alternative” non-bank financing market. Bill also spent time early in his career as a journalist at Euromoney and Bloomberg.

Bill’s specialisations range across the Capital Markets. He ran the Financial Institutions Sector at Bear Stearns and HCBC, became an expert in the Sovereign Debt Crisis during the 2008-12 crisis, and has now built up the leading “Alternative Assets” group at Mint raising finance through private placements, direct lending, secured and hybrid debt/equity for SMEs and mid-caps.
Bill’s daily “Morning Porridge” commentary is read by 3000 plus market professionals each day – its scurrilous, brutally honest and has landed him in hot-water with regulators and management, but it gets him regular media appearances. Outside the financial markets Bill is a passionate sailor, and won the Royal Ocean Racing Club championship in 2009. In addition he paints badly, plays awful guitar, is learning the bagpipes and built a train-set in his attic.
