EU Election Day
Itโs a big day for the EU as voters head to the polls for what may be the most important election period yet with the very future of the Union at stake. Yikes!
Today marks the start of a four day election period that stands to not only influence Brussels policy for the next 5 years, ย but potentially the fate of the EU itself. The last election in 2014 saw the number of nationalists against the EU double, with Brexit happening not too long after in 2016.
This time, in 2019, the fear is much the same. And even though the drawn out Brexit process is enough to make any other country reconsider a nationalist push towards independence, analysts are envisioning another big turnout from Euro-sceptics to be a prevalent feature in these elections.
But whatโs so bad about Euro-scepticism? It represents a real threat to the stability of the European Union. A continued rise in anti-EU parties and movements could precipitate the breakdown of the Union and some significant issues for regional markets.
A greater representation from Euro-sceptics could mean more disruptions to come in an already-troubled region, creating unwanted downside pressure on the Euro and European asset prices. Stay tuned, this could get interesting.
