This week we asked the Invstr Community how they felt about taxing the rich. The responses varied – demonstrating a healthy variety of opinion from Invstr’s across the globe. One of the most popular answers was “yes,” with 60% of Invstr’s choosing this option. This opinion is increasingly popular with younger generations. Growing up in the after math of the 2008 recession, COVID, and an ever-increasing wealth gap it is understandable that some see a further increase in taxes on the rich as helpful.
The second most popular response reflected another reasonable way to look at the situation, which is that the rich already pay their fair share. Indeed, the Rich (at least those who abide by the law) pay taxes, and although there are loopholes, there are millions of wealthy people who do not hesitate to pay taxes. There is definitely a question of fairness when it comes to taxing those at different incomes more.
Lastly, 13% and 7% of Invstr’s chose “no” and “don’t know” respectively. While those answering “no” are in a similar camp to the investors answering, “don’t they already pay taxes” – it is interesting to see 7% of Invstr’s answering “don’t know” (considering the issue is quite controversial). Nevertheless, no matter how you respond though it is important to reflect on your beliefs as well as the beliefs of others. Always questioning, thinking, and analyzing the issues of the real world is a powerful way to keep learning – especially in the investment world. Thank you for reading this month’s poll article and have a great rest of your week everyone!
