CyberFunk 2020
In December, a brand-new video game launch had fans around the world ecstatic. Even after multiple delays and broken promises, fans braced themselves for an exciting action role-playing game on December 10, just in time for the holidays. Unfortunately, while playing the game, players found glitches, bugs, and for many, the game was downright unplayable. The game in question is CyberPunk 2077.
CyberPunk 2077 is a game developed by Polish video game company CD Projekt Red. CD Projekt Red is a big company, with a market cap of around $6.8 billion. At one time, they were the most valuable company in Poland. And CD Projekt Red was the brains behind the acclaimed Witcher video game series, so fans had big expectations for CyberPunk 2077.
The launch was a disaster, leading Sony to remove the game from its online play store just seven days after it launched, and Sony offered full refunds to disappointed players. CD Projekt Red’s stock dropped more than 15% overnight following Sony’s announcement and a 30% drop from December 10 to mid-January. They are even facing a class action lawsuit.
Why was the game so dysfunctional? Last Friday, an article published by Jason Schrier at Bloomberg gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the controversial video game rollout. Current and former CD Projekt Red staff reveal how developers knew the game wasn’t ready to be released. Even after delaying the release multiple times, the game still wasn’t finished on release day. How upset would you be if you waited eight years for a game, only to purchase it for $60 and have it not work correctly?
Unrealistic expectations made CyberPunk 2077 a buggy mess on launch day, but they plan on updating and fixing the game soon.
