Conservative party Chairman Brandon Lewis has urged MP’s in the British parliament to back the government’s Brexit legislation later today or risk “chaos”.

The European Union Withdrawal Bill is slated to complete its first journey through parliament’s lower house later today, representing an important milestone in the implementation of the legal foundations of Brexit.

The bill, which repeals the 1972 law which made Britain a member of the EU and transfers EU laws into British ones when the UK leaves in 2019, has been the subject of intense scrutiny and debate from pro-Remain MP’s across different parties, but is expected to pass today despite plenty of opposition from the Labour party in particular.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said he will instruct his party members to vote against the bill if concerns about democratic accountability, protection of workers, consumer rights and the environment are not addressed.

This crucial stage for the bill comes just after European Council President Donald Tusk said the the UK would be welcome to stay in the EU if it changed its mind about Brexit.

Tusk said in a speech to the European Parliament on Tuesday: “If the UK government sticks to its decision to leave, Brexit will become a reality with all its negative consequences in March next year, unless there is a change of heart among our British friends. We here on the continent haven’t had a change of heart, our hearts are still open to you.”
