Athleisure Crushes Basketballย
It would seem that the end of days is nearing for basketball sneakers, while the obsession with athleisure continues to boom…RIP B-ball sneaks, you will be missed.ย
While the sneaker market as a whole is alive and well, basketball sales have been in a steady decline since 2015 and just suffered a telling -20% blow in the first quarter of 2019 alone. The new focus on athleisure brands has been all about comfort, comfort and more comfort.ย
And who does comfort better than Adidas and Nike? Both brands have seen a marked improvement in sales since the death of the baggy pants and big kicks style in favour of skinny jeans and sportier footwear.ย
Athleisure brands, such as Puma, Fila, Lululemon and Champion have gobbled up the market share held by the B-Ball giants like Jordan, and it would seem they’re just getting started. Analysts are predicting a multi-year dominance for athleisure as the rise of the health and wellness culture takes root in the clothing industry.ย
So say goodbye to your Jordans nostalgia, kids, It’s all about yoga pants and slick sporty sneakers from here on out.
