Apple Opens Up
Consumers have become more aware of how tech companies track what they do online. The need and desire to hide away from these data gatherers have continued to grow.
How will people be able to ever figure out how they are being tracked when most of it is done without them even knowing about it?
Apple’s IOS 14 iPhone update intends to solve this issue when it launches later this fall. Along with a redesigned home screen and picture-in-picture support, so you can watch videos while you do other things, the IOS update will alert you when apps are accessing your camera or microphone.
With this update, it will be much harder for apps to track you without at least knowing about it. You’ll be able to share your approximate location rather than your precise location. You’ll receive a new privacy report that will tell you the websites that track you and how many of them have been blocked. A tiny dot will even appear on the top-right of your screen to tell if an app is using your microphone or camera.
For users, this is a step in the right direction. On the other hand, businesses that have relied on highly targeted advertising to make a profit in the past few years will have to wait and see how this new update affects the reliability and accuracy of the data they gather to make a profit.
