Anonymous
Anonymous is one of the best-known hacker groups in the world. The group has become well-known for its infamous “anonymous” mask infiltrating pop culture. Anonymous operates as a decentralized international activist- and hacktivist collective and movement primarily known for its various cyberattacks against several governments, government institutions and government agencies, corporations, and the Church of Scientology. Most recently, Anonymous has claimed to be hacking Russia amidst their war with Ukraine. More specifically, the group has vowed to Accelerate Cyber War and Paralyze Putin’s Regime ‘by Any Means Necessary.’ In a statement from Anonymous directly, they said “We must show our true power to the Russian government and their president Vladimir Putin. We must unite or else there might be a day that it’s too late to do it. Putin must be stopped, or else we’ll suffer the consequences. Anons all over the world, hackers, activists – journalists, all over the world must unite. All of you, everyday people must also unite.”
So far, they’ve made a few solid hits on Russia with hacking fact-checkers verifying the public claims they’ve made concerning a hack. Some of the specific claims Anonymous has made include disabling the prominent Russian government, news, corporate websites, and leaking data from the federal agency responsible for censoring Russian media. This new era of cyber-warfare is unknown to financial markets but could have major implications if a hack struck a power grid, internet network, or any major piece of infrastructure. The Anonymous hacker’s group activity should remind investors that as technology grows, there are new variables to consider, and more investments to be made in industries like cybersecurity. What do you think about anonymous hackers? And do you support their white-hacking initiative against Russia?
