Remember when Tesla was the most talked about stock by far? Well, I definitely do. Just back in February we saw Tesla’s share price climb rapidly, going from 700 dollars to about 900 dollars per share in just a few days, before breaking the 1,000-dollar barrier due to a deal from Hertz. A few weeks after that, Tesla’s market cap reached the 1 trillion mark, which is a very exclusive club. When this happened Musk, himself questioned why the valuation of the company rose. Since then, Tesla has seen the hype die down a bit and its valuation (although still overblown by traditional metrics) come down a bit.
Recently, Tesla’s AI and Autopilot leader Andrej Karpathy, who led the team, has stepped down from the company. Karpathy announced his departure in a tweet yesterday, explaining: “It’s been a great pleasure to help Tesla towards its goals over the last 5 years and a difficult decision to part ways”. He also said “In that time, Autopilot graduated from lane keeping to city streets and I look forward to seeing the exceptionally strong Autopilot team continue that momentum.” It’s rare to see top leaders leave massive tech companies, but when it does happen, it always raises the question: what’s next for the company?
What do you think is next for Tesla and how do you think Karpathy’s departure will affect the future of Tesla’s autopilot technology?
