Adolescent Jabs
The Pfizer vaccine has been a success so far. With its mind-boggling efficacy rate, quick production, and strength against new variants, it has been one of the greatest vaccines in history. Being the first mRNA vaccine, it has brought back economies worldwide and saved so many lives. However, the vaccine has been available for people aged 16 and up, and that is now set to change.
Pfizer announced on Monday that the FDA is likely to authorize the COVID-19 vaccine for 12 through 15-year-olds, labeled as adolescents. This came as unexpected news as many thought it would happen at the end of 2021. Pfizer smashed expectations, and they have the evidence to back it. During their clinical trials in adolescents, the vaccine proved to have a 100 percent efficacy rate with impressive antibody responses. It was expected to be higher than the adult efficacy rate, but 100 percent is crazy.
This news comes at a perfect time as cases in children are continuing to rise. By vaccinating the adolescent population, it can bring us a bit closer to achieving herd immunity, even though transmission is lower in children. More importantly, if they can get vaccinated, it allows schools to fully reopen, which is a big boost for education across the country. Online schooling has been proven to be terrible for students, and a vaccination push is a great way for teachers to reunite with their kids in the classroom.
Biden has planned for it also; he announced that pediatricians would be able to give children the vaccine, and many pharmacy sites across the country would also have permission to vaccinate children. Barring a surprising FDA rejection, the Pfizer vaccine is set for another rollout. Do you think this is a smart decision?
